Ego vs Purpose – Why You Really Started Podcasting

Ego gets you started; purpose keeps you going. Why lasting podcasts come from vision, not vanity.

Ego vs Purpose: Why You Really Want to Start a Podcast

Ego often sparks the first flame. Purpose keeps it burning.

When most people decide to launch a podcast, they picture the microphone, the audience, maybe the thrill of seeing their name next to the word “host.” It feels exciting. Empowering. Like stepping onto a stage. But here’s the quiet truth: ego might get you started, yet purpose is what makes you stay.

When I recorded my first episodes, I didn’t have a master plan. There was no chart of how this would grow my business or what outcomes I was chasing. I just wanted to create. That’s where most of us begin. And that’s fine-creation rarely starts fully formed.

But as the episodes roll on, the buzz fades, and the real work begins. Scheduling guests, editing audio, repurposing clips – it’s easy to ask yourself, “Why am I doing this again?” That’s the moment ego stops being enough fuel. Purpose has to take over.

The Ego Stage – Where We All Start

Ego isn’t evil. It’s the part of us that says, “I’ve got something worth saying.” That confidence is essential at the start. Many of my clients admit they launched because they saw others on stage or online and thought, I can add more value than that.

That’s not arrogance. That’s awareness. The problem comes when ego becomes the driver rather than the ignition. You start chasing validation instead of meaning.

Ego says, “Look at me.” Purpose asks, “How can I help?”

If ego built the studio, purpose is what keeps the lights on.

The Pivot Point – When Purpose Emerges

At some point, every podcaster hits a wall. Mine came around episode 50 of MarketPulse. The show had traction, but I wasn’t enjoying it. I’d fallen out of love with the direction. Each new recording felt heavier than the last.

It wasn’t until I revisited why I wanted to do it in the first place that everything shifted. We re-focused season two around genuine founder stories – what drives them, not just what they sell. The energy came rushing back. The numbers followed too. Views climbed. Engagement grew.

Purpose had taken the wheel.

The Trap – Monetisation and Metrics

One of the most common questions I hear: “How do I get sponsorship?” It’s a fair question, but it’s rarely the right first one. Sponsorship is a by-product, not a purpose.

The real ROI of podcasting isn’t pounds or clicks – it’s relationships. It’s the depth of conversation you have with a guest who might become a client, a collaborator, or a connector. It’s the audience who trusts your voice enough to reach out months later.

When you treat your guests well, when you craft episodes that serve your audience instead of yourself, your credibility compounds. That’s when sponsors start calling you.

The Magic of Vision

Finding a podcast’s vision is like tuning a radio – you twist the dial until the static clears. At first, it’s fuzzy. That’s okay. You can’t always find clarity before you launch. Clarity lives in motion.

You’ll only discover your true message by showing up, episode after episode. Purpose doesn’t announce itself – it reveals itself through doing.

Take Dr Alison Schmidt’s Unconventional Leaders podcast. She asks every guest to describe themselves in three “UN” words – unfiltered, unpredictable, unbreakable. It’s clever, but more importantly, it’s hers. That little twist came from aligning her podcast with her purpose.

When your format reflects your values, you stand out naturally. You stop chasing trends and start defining them.

The Lesson – Start Imperfect, Grow Intentional

Don’t wait for perfect. Perfect is ego in disguise. Start messy. Record wherever you can. Learn as you go. The polish comes later. What matters is getting your message out early enough to refine it through real feedback.

Your purpose will evolve, and that’s part of the journey. Just keep checking back in with your “why.” Ask yourself:

– Who am I really doing this for?

– What do I want this podcast to mean for my listeners?

– What legacy would I love to leave when this ends?

If you can answer those three, the rest follows.

Because the measure of a podcast isn’t downloads – it’s the depth of connection it creates. Ego shouts. Purpose resonates.

Final Thought

Let your ego light the match. Then hand the torch to purpose.

Your listeners don’t just want another voice; they want someone who means what they say. When your podcast comes from that place, everything changes – your guests, your energy, your growth.

Start wherever you are. Launch imperfectly. Refine with purpose.

And when you feel stuck, remember: ego starts the show. Purpose makes it worth listening to.
